Highlands Recreation Association is a community of mostly traditional style single family homes. The northern flank of the neighborhood abuts the hills of the Santa Monica Mountains; the entrance to Trailer Canyon Fire Road off Michael Lane provides immediate access to a vast network of hiking trails. Homes in the community offer varying degrees and types of view depending on location and orientation. Many of the homes have been at least partially remodeled since the original construction.
The association maintains a recreation center with a recently rebuilt clubhouse (2007), pair of tennis courts, swimming pool, kiddie pool, spa, exercise room, basketball court, and playground.
