Lower Bel Air is loosely defined and encompasses a number of sub-neighborhoods discussed on this website, including Ashdale/Glenroy, Bentley Area, East Gate (Old Bel Air), Lower Casiano, Moraga Drive, Moraga Estates, Thurston Area and West Gate. The portion of Lower Bel Air discussed below includes all homes north and east of the aforementioned communities, within a 2-5 minute drive of Sunset Blvd (defined by the large orange shaded area in the center of the above map). Property north of this area is considered Upper Bel Air.

Larger estates are concentrated within the rolling foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, particularly along the northern fringe of Old Bel Air.
